Metal Plating 101

Metal plating involves the process of coating a substrate with a thin layer of metal to enhance its corrosion resistance, appearance, strength, and other important properties. This is typically achieved through a process known as electroplating, which involves submerging the substrate into an acid solution and using an electric current to deposit a thin layer of the coating material onto the substrate.

The Metal Plating Process

Before the plating process begins, the metal workpiece must be cleaned and prepared. This helps ensure that the plating material properly interacts with and adheres to the workpiece. This process includes:

  • Solvent Degreasing. In this process, chemicals such as alcohol, petroleum, or chlorine are used to remove machining fluids and grease from the surface of the material.
  • Acid Rinse. Rinsing the workpieces in nitric or citric acid baths removes contaminants on the surface of the material.
  • Passivating (only if applicable). Passivation occurs before metal plating to remove any surface contamination, especially if the material was previously machined.


Types of Plating Services

At International Assembly, we offer the following metal plating services:

. Electroplating

Electroplating is one of the most common types of metal plating. It uses electrodeposition to deposit a thin metal layer onto the workpiece to modify its physical characteristics and improve its resistance to wear, corrosion, and other forms of damage.

. Corrosion Cleaning

Acid baths commonly used in metal plating processes can etch away trace contaminants, ferrous elements, and corroded metal to clear away damage and reduce the size of the workpiece. This can clean the metal for further use or prepare it for further plating and treating.


In addition, IAI Mexico also offers bright dipping services for brass materials:

. Bright Dip (For Brass Materials Only)

The bright dipping process uses a bath of concentrated acid to remove scales and deposits from metal, remove burrs and other surface defects, and enhance corrosion resistance. The final finish can be bright, matte, or lustrous depending on the metal and plating process used.


Post-Plating Metal

At International Assembly, our team also offers post-plating services, including:

  • Chromate Dip/Chromate Conversion Coating. This process takes place after zinc plating and imparts a thin inert layer to enhance corrosion resistance and provide protection to the underlying material.
  • Passivation. Passivation is also used as a post-treatment process and creates an inert oxide layer on the surface of the finished workpiece to enhance corrosion resistance.
  • Bake-Off Oven. Bake-off ovens heat the surface of metal workpieces without overheating or melting the pieces. It removes hydrogen that infuses into the workpiece during the plating process to eliminate the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.


Brass & Steel Plating Services at International Assembly

We offer trivalent chromate protection/finish and zinc chromate plating services for steel and brass workpieces ranging in size from 5/16 inches in diameter and 3/4 inches long to 1/2 inches in diameter and 72 inches long. Our manual plating lines incorporate pre-plating, rack and barrel plating, and post-plating options.

Trivalent chromate protection/finish provides scratch and corrosion resistance.

. Zinc Chromate Plating

Depending on the chemical bath and the workpiece material, zinc chromate can produce either a yellow or a blue-bright finish that provides increased corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal.
